Top of the pyramid: why Arsene Wenger has little blame in Arsenal’s woes

As Arsenal once again come crashing out of dreamland into the reality that another season has been lost in disappointment, the annual discontent is getting louder for every passing year. Many supporters are once again calling for a managerial change, claiming Wenger has reached the limit of what he’s capable of. But is Wenger really the main problem? (more…)

The possible (and impossible) in and outs of the January transfer window

With a shoddy start to the season, and some unfortunate injuries, Wenger is facing one of the more interesting January windows in recent history. Arsenal are in such obvious need of full backs that the prices will skyrocket in that area, but Wenger is playing it cool as usual, claiming his normal “if we find quality we’ll buy” mantra to mask what’s really going on behind the scenes. Should Arsene Wenger take a serious look at Fernando Torres?

We all know the story of how Fernando Torres became the most expensive Premier League signing in history with his £50m move from Liverpool to Chelsea in January 2011, but no one could have predicted how the Spaniard would plummet in form, failing to score in his first 13 games for Chelsea, only scoring a total of 5 goals in 35 appearances. Are Arsenal really in desperate need of a new defensive midfielder?

As Arsenal gear up for the new season, the fans have been having their say on which areas of the team they think need strengthening with brand new signings this summer, with one of the most common positions mentioned being defensive-midfield.

But do Arsenal really need a defensive-midfielder? Cesc is unsettled and “torn”, so should he stay captain of Arsenal?

After guesswork and conspiracy theories spanning several weeks, Arsene Wenger yesterday revealed that Cesc Fabregas is “unsettled” and “caught between two loves”, referring to our captain’s desire to move back home. Only problem is that his hometown happens to host the most successful team in the world in the last 3-4 years – which, unfortunately, also happens to be a club that feels entitled to have “their” player back for whatever price they feel is reasonable. Is the “poacher” the perfect Arsenal signing this summer?

Despite restoring some pride in their season with a 1-0 win over Manchester United, Arsenal’s season effectively ended with a 2-1 loss away to Bolton and Arsenal fans and pundits have already begun assessing the kind of activity Arsenal may provide in the summer transfer window. As ever, most of the names chucked into the Arsenal rumour mill are highly unrealistic suggestions and aren’t guaranteed to ensure success. One of the most interesting ideas, however, was that Arsenal needed to buy a traditional “goalscorer” or “poacher”, but would a poacher solve Arsenal’s problems up front? Joss Bennett and Hayden Shaw have different opinions. (more…)

Would Expensive Signings Equal Success And Trophies?

In recent weeks there has been a vocal concern from both individual fans and supporter groups regarding the lack of trophies at Arsenal since the Invincibles season in 2003-2004 and the FA Cup victory in 2005. The main gripe seems to be about Wenger’s stubbornness in not bringing in experienced or established players with a winning mentality – but is this really true? And would such potential signings turn Arsenal into a dominating force?
