Abou Diaby: Should he be offered a new contract?

Posted by Patron about 9 years ago · 2 replies

Last week Wenger altered the generally positive tune he maintains when discussing Diaby. The Arsenal manager said he had “a decision to make” about the player’s future...

Diaby’s situation does not fit comfortably with the current rules over squad numbers. Premier League regulations allow each club to select a maximum of 25 players, 17 of whom who are not classified as home-grown. Diaby uses up one of those valuable places.

The way I see it is that the only way he can earn a new contract is not only by staying fit until the end of the season, which would be an achievement in itself, but to get enough game time to be able to perform.

I wouldn't be against signing him to a new contract if we also lower his wages to a reasonable level - a level where it doesn't impact the club negatively. Then use some form of appearance bonus system instead.

The thing is, if Diaby is released his career is over and he'll have to start working at McDonalds. No club would take him on. At least he has hope in his life if he stays at Arsenal, and can make a living. I admire Wenger's humanity and empathy when it comes to Diaby. Shows what class Arsenal have.
