Arsenal Report v4

Ok here's the deal: the site is getting a visual makeover and will have a handful of new features added (and some removed). I already have a list of ideas ranging from super cool to super dumb, but before I get started I want to hear your ideas for how we can improve the site.

Best of all: We're giving away THREE Arsenal shirts to participants in this thread, as thanks for getting involved. Home, away, third...your choice. I'll pick two winners based on their suggestions, and then let's do the third one random.

Sounds good? Good. Get started. I'm open to any suggestions, ranging from colour schemes to brand new features to suggestions about removing stuff...really anything. I'm mostly interested in how we can make the Transfer Centre and Injury Room better, as those are our primary features, but again...open to anything.

Here's a summary of (realistic) ideas so far:

  • Lineup/Formation maker (like lineupbuilder and all those, but something that doesn't look like absolute dog shit)
  • Historic kits
  • Countdown timer to next game
  • Arse-O-Pedia (Arsenal encyclopedia)
  • St Totteringham's Day through history
  • Suspensions section
  • Activity based forum karma points (you lose points for not being active)
  • WYSIWYG for posts and comments
  • All-time trophy room
  • Positivity index (perhaps based on #WengerOut trends)
  • Quiz
  • Videos section
  • Transfer Centre: ROI chart
  • Transfer Centre: Countdown timer to transfer window
  • Transfer Centre: Transfer rumours and linked player
  • Injury Room: % of first team squad matches lost to injury, overall and by position
  • Comment previews before posting
  • News feed
  • Injury comparisons between all Premier League clubs

First of all it should look very polished. I like how you design things so I trust you'll get it right. Obviously it has to be very simple. Formations shouldn't be predetermined. Sure it has to have some formations to chose from so we can save time but it must have the option to freely move each player around the pitch for a custom formation. Something that'll help is players for selection rather than user typing the names again it should also include the option to type in names (creating formations based on transfer rumors etc.). If you want to go more advanced you could add the option to create directional arrows but that's not a must. And finally the most important feature would be the share option. It has to be seamless. I guess you won't be able to save every created formation on the server due to the amount of space required so how you'll make the share feature is interesting and crucial.

Gotcha. Saving a user's lineups is piss easy tbh.

Couple of suggestions:

1) Could you implement a way for us to preview our replies before we post them?

2) A small news section for current/any Arsenal news?

3) A clock that shows how long it has been since Sp*rs last won the League so that we can laugh at them.

4) With the line-up maker, would it also be possible to add in the opposing team's line up as well, so that instead of just seeing 11 guys on the pitch, we can potentially see all 22?

This might require a shitload of time and effort but something that has been trending for some time now is our injuries vs other clubs' injuries. How do the amount of our injuries compare to others, do our players take more or less than average time needed for a specific injury to heal etc.

The problem isn't putting it together, the problem is keeping it updated. I could scrape physioroom for the data on other clubs but the problem is that physioroom doesn't have the accuracy we have so the comparison with our data is distorted.

However, the way around it could be to not use our data for the comparison, instead using physioroom (or whatever source) exclusively to compare numbers. That way it's the same inaccuracy for all teams, so should even out and give somewhat reliable numbers.

Let me take a look and see if this would be easy enough.

The main issue with physioroom is that they don't actually track length of injuries, so the only thing we could count on their page would be number of injuries and when they happened. Do you know of any other source for league injuries?

This idea was so good I immediately coded it. Check the home page.

I LOVE it.

Sorry here late as only just discovered the site...

Visually its really impressive and I love the piles of data and analysis.

If you have the number of days at the club and of course number of trophies won... how about number of days per trophy for great players?

I also like the compare feature on Sqwarka for example. Would be nice to see how David Hillier compares to Santi Carzola (for example).

There also used to be an online Arsenal top trumps style battle card game... Can't find it anymore but that would be fun.

Now can I have the third shirt please ?? :)

No
Uh, "no"...

Would be awesome but no historical data available before 2003 I think it is. Opta didn't start tracking until then.

Will do the draw soon, just been busy at work!

Hmm, well, since the motto of the site is "Laughing at Spurs, since 1886," and since my idea has so far been the only one that can get people to laugh at them, I feel like I should have a 75% chance of winning that shirt, no?
