How would you set up our midfield

Posted by VA10 over 7 years ago · 36 replies

Now that Xhaka is here and Ramsey has been out of this world at the Euros, how would set up our midfield for this season?

I'd go with this if we don't sign a right winger Xhaka Santi Ramsey-Ozil-Alexis

But there's just too many midfielders ffs! Wilshere, Coq, El Neny....

I think it has been clear since at least last season, that:

  • Santi Cazorla is world class
  • It works with him as a CM

He might not be strong and can be outmuscled easily, but his numbers on interceptions and tackles are actually decent for a man his size. On the other hand, his dribbling and key-passing numbers, considering we also have Ozil in the team are impressive to say the least. What I'm trying to say is that he's an auto-pick.

The other slot I think should go to one of Coquelin/Xhaka. Both are hard tacklers, both fight for the ball. Xhaka, however, is awesome at passing, as we've witnessed.

I think there is not set midfield for every game, Wenger has more midfielders in his Arsenal than ever before, so he can tinker before games. 2 DMs? 1 CM/1 DM? 2 Creative CMS?

Lots of possibilities.

I said Santi should play as a CM before we got Ozil. He's the closest thing we can have to Modric who in my opinion is an elite footballer. I really like and appreciate Coquelin but he seems limited at times... I get the idea of changing midfield according to opposition, venue, injuries etc but I still think we should have a settled midfield which only comes by playing a lot together

Think Wenger is trialling Coq in this new playing style/role he has to tailor make it for Ramsey when he's back, playing Xhaka/Santi next to him.

Surely with all players fit Ramsey wouldn't even start at this stage. Xhaka+Cazorla in midfield, Özil in the #10...no place for Ramsey.

If Ramsey starts producing what he can produce, he has a shout for that starting spot...

I agree, but let's say all players are 100% fit and in-form...I'm not sure I'd pick Ramsey over either Xhaka nor Cazorla currently. Definitely not over Ozil, obviously. The only other option is for him to take Walcott's place on the right, which he has done a good job at before...but again, an in-form Theo is probably worth more for the team on the flank.

Xhaka/cazorla, but give cazorla liberal rest one Rambo is back, since he is quite old.

Coq is fine as a squad player, but there are 4 choices better than him in central midfield.

I don't think Rambo needs to be played out wide, especially with Iwobi emerging add a reliable squad player.

Ramsey will probably end-up fighting with Walcott at the right flank, as midfield is fully jammed.. Cazorla is a sure starter as CM and Coquelin/Xhaka will be rotated to play along with him.. (Xhaka might need little more time to adapt to PL)

Santi and Xhaka together in Cm I think would give the midfield the right balance. Wenger will probably keep rotating Coquelin/ Xhaka in dm.

I'd rather sell Coquelin for Leon Goretzka because he offers a lot more than winning the ball. Plus, it would be good profit off of Coquelin since he did come here for free (according to Arsenalreport.com). Then, keep whoever is being consistent in instead fo switching every other game.

Plus, Santi needs some time to rest, too, so it would not be terrible if we had Goretzka with Xhaka.

Plus, he would do well with Xhaka who is not a bad player for all those who think he's rubbish.
