Mathieu Debuchy vents frustration at not being first choice

Posted by Ix Techau over 8 years ago · 5 replies

Doesn't sound good...

It’s difficult. Even though I didn’t play a lot last season, in my head I thought I’d return to the starting lineup after my recovery. But at the Community Shield against Chelsea, Wenger chose him, [Hector] Bellerin. It was a surprise and a disappointment. Let’s say it crossed my mind [leaving]…but I want to be at Arsenal and to regain my place.

[Wenger] told me nothing was gained and that there’s a lot of games over the course of a season. He knows I’m worried though because there’s an important deadline at the end of the season. It’s a must to hold down a first team place. It’s clear. To be effective on the field you need game time. In the long-term, if this situation continues it could become tricky.

Nothing I have seen from him since he joined Arsenal would make me that bothered if he forced his way out. But on paper he is a top right back and could cover centre if required. I expect at some point he will get a run and may very well retain the spot.

he should play against the better opposition, where arsenal have to buckle down defensively. bellerin is too liberal going forward at this point, but great for helping to break down those bus parking mid table sides.

I find it absolutely ridiculous that anyone believes Bellerin is a better right-back than Debuchy. In the season before he joined Arsenal he was easily the best right-back in the Premier League, and that's playing for a shitty team like Newcastle. There is no reason whatsoever to believe his quality has dropped.

He's been injured for so long people forget what he's capable of. I like Bellerin and hope he's our future starting RB, but let's be serious. He bombs forward like he's on crack, constantly leaving us exposed on the flank. And when he finally stays back he's not exactly a defensive rock.

I'd take Debuchy any day over Bellerin, at this stage. In 2-3 years however, who knows.

Debuchy was fantastic in his first few games. His Arsenal career has been blighted by two really unfortunate injuries. He needs to accept that there's competition now, though. I think he's a better fullback at the minute than Bellerin, too.
