Strikers

Posted by VA10 over 8 years ago · 157 replies

I was thinking about the lack of strikers today. Is there a striker like Aguero, Suearez or Lewandowski available? Even Benzema isn't as good as them in my opinion.

TIL half a season is 26 games and scoring 20 goalsAtm everyone at Chelsea are shit, they'll pick it up sooner or later and leave us in the dust along with City

Why so negative about Arsenal?? We were expected not to finish in top 4 if first half last year and then we almost got the second one. #positive-vibes mate

So Chelsea can't afford them but we should. Ok then.

Who said we could? My whole argument is that you can get any player if you throw enough cash at it. Monaco didn't want to lose Martial, so Van Gaal had to throw £36m at them. If Wenger needs a world class striker he needs to understand what that means, financially. If there are no "available" strikers (players whose clubs want to get rid of them), then he needs to be prepared to open the vault.

For example, we could have gotten Benzema, but there is no way Wenger would pay £60m+ for him.

Worth to note that our big signings so far have come as a result of them becoming surplus to requirements at their current clubs as they've brought in better players/tactical switches. We're far too nice on the market, we need to unsettle players and make them available rather than wait around like vultures.

Furthermore, even if a world class striker were to be made "available", if this striker is indeed world class, all the top clubs will bid for his services, which will drive the price up practically to where it would be to lure a player away who is still wanted at the original club.

Who the hell cares? How much do you think griezmann would cost?

AW could have picked up either Alexis or Griezemann last year, which one would you have chosen? my vote is with Alexis. This year he is easily 45+ mil and no reason what so ever for Athletic to let him go at that price.

This was my question

I take it Chelsea having shit strike force since Drogba left is also down to them not wanting Benzema or Lewandowski or Aguero?

This was your brilliant answer.

You seem confused over wanting something and being able to afford something.

MY QUESTION WAS WHY DIDN'T CHELSEA SIGN THE LIKES OF BENZEMA LEWANDOWSKI ETC. YOU SAID THEY COULDN'T AFFORD THEM AND NOW YOU'RE SAYING 60M+ WOULD HAVE GOTTEN US BENZEMA. SO CHELSEA COULDN'T FIND 65 MILLION QUID IN THEIR BANK. Give it up already...

Griezmann's release clause is around £58m.

And cause getting Benzema isn't a big upgrade on a title winning striker such as Diego Costa.

Benzema isn't an upgrade on Costa. I won't even entertain that argument. But I will just a little bit.

2014-15 Giroud took part in 36 games totaling 2366 minutes, he scored 19 goals and made 4 assists. Diego Costa played 37 games totaling 2915 minutes, he scored 20 goals and made 5 assists. Also important to mention that Diego Costa managed 0 goals and a whopping 1 assist in Champions League. I won't even compare these stats to Benzema.

It's nice when you skew statistics in your favour. Diego Costa got 20 goals in 26 league appearances. No idea why your mentioning Giroud when he isn't anywhere near as good as him.

The season before Costa also got 8 in 9 in the CL with 27 goals in 32 league appearances for Atleti, greater than numbers than Benzema has ever achieved for Real Madrid.

Although you have to put these into context as Benzema's main job is a supporting role whereas strikers like Giroud & Diego Costa are the main men.

In short, the tiny upgrade from Diego Costa to Benzema isn't worth the upgrade and the hassle of dealing with two world class strikers in a one striker formation isn't worth the hassle it generates. For us it's completely different as Giroud isn't in that bracket and were unable to win the title with him up front.

Easy to understand? good.

So Costa scoring 20 goals in 26 games in the League makes him not a main man? Laughable. Just cause he's an absolute cunt doesn't mean you have to downplay his ability.

In other news Welbz has had surgery on his knee and is out for a period of months. But of course we didn't need a striker of any kind in the transfer window

Welbeck out for months.

This makes our lack of activity in the transfer window even worse. What the actual fuck? Is Wenger so thick that he actually thinks that playing with Giroud and Walcott as back-up make us title contenders? Giroud is alright, but Walcott is rubbish there. We should be playing him on the wing, but now we have to do with him as striker aswell. For fuck's sake man, what is wrong with Wenger?

It also goes against what Wenger said on Thursday, as he said that Welbeck is 1 week away. The decision for Welbeck to have surgery was made a week before the deadline say Arsenal.

Wenger won't be happy, it exposes him as a liar and stops any excuses about not bringing in a single outfield player in the Summer.

Obviously Chelsea didn't want Benzema, as they could easily afford him. I don't know how much money Bayern would need to let Lewandowski go, but if Chelsea wanted him the fee was obviously too high to justify. Again you seem very confused over the terms 'want' and 'able to get'. You're making the assumption that Chelsea wanted Benzema. They didn't.
