Arsenal 1-1 Wolves: All possession and no end product makes Robin a dull boy

Christmas day’s third helpings proved to be too much for an Arsenal side who appeared all too happy to sit on the traditional ‘One nil to The Arsenal’ scoreline. Wolves’ players, meanwhile, obviously laid out their milk and cookies for Santa – riding their luck to the max. as The Gunners’ rich run of form ground to a sudden halt. (more…)

As a way to prevent Arsenal controlling the midfield, Mick McCarthy set up a very narrow 4-3-1-2, with a high defensive line to prevent Arsenal’s central players from dominating. The pushed up defensive line meant Arsenal could distribute fairly speculative passes to the flanks, where Arshavin and Walcott were switching positions and utilising their speed to get around the crowded central midfield. Arsenal v Wolves: Live Blog

This is our test run with the new live blog feature. Unfortunately we haven’t had time to implement the auto-refresh feature yet, so in this test run you’ll have to manually refresh the browser. If you come across any bugs, please let us know in the comments section below. Have fun!

That’s it for me. A good victory, but the lack of end product is worrying. We can’t ruin chances like this on Wednesday.

16:41

Arsenal’s defensive line has gone deep, and the formation is now more similar to a traditional 4-4-2 than a 4-2-3-1. Wolves are at a final attempt to get something from the match, and Arsenal are looking a little shaky in their defensive positioning in the last 5-6 minutes.

16:26

Arsenal are pushing high to control the midfield and avoid another Newcastle incident, creating lots of chances in the process. Wolves are getting tired and aren’t pressing at the level they should.

16:18

New working title: “Arsenal 2-0 Wolves: So many chances, so few goals”.

16:15

Wolves tackling harder at the start of the second half, a common half-time instruction against Arsenal. Song isn’t man-marking as I initially thought he would be. The marking behaviour he displayed against Everton seems to just have been a one-off.

16:05

As it stands, the current working title for tomorrow’s in-depth report is “Arsenal 1-0 Wolves: Lack of end product ruins fun”.

15:53

Some random Opta facts:

- Robin van Persie has scored nine goals in his last seven Premier League matches.
- Robin van Persie is the top scorer in the Premier League in 2011 with 9 goals.

15:50

Half-time. Arsenal are showing good defensive positioning and discipline, and have started to fully dominate the midfield. Arsenal have had 5 shots on target, and have been somewhat unlucky, even though Arshavin should have buried an open chance in the middle of the first half. If Arsenal can keep the pressure up, goals should start rolling in.

15:39

Fabregas is starting to play higher again, as the pressure from Wolves has decreased. Song and Wilshere are slowly taking control of the central midfield, as Wolves are slightly confused about the constant positional swapping in Arsenal’s forward line.

15:33

Tempo dying slightly around the 25 minute mark, as both teams temporarily calm down in the pressure department. Lots of intricate passing from Arsenal between the 25th and 30th minute, confidence is growing.

15:24

Arsenal continue exploiting the lack of speed down Wolves’ full back flanks. Cesc is starting to drop deeper to avoid the pressure further up the pitch.

15:19

Wolves playing an extremely high defensive line, Arsenal responding by distributing to the flanks. Formation is the standard 4-2-3-1, but Walcott and Arshavin are forced out wider than usual. Wolves continue to press high.

15:09

Arshavin is hugging the line, opening up space on the left to run around the left back, instead of going through the middle. Walcott is deeper in defensive positions, and is isolated on the right flank so far.

14:33

OK, guys & girls, to my regret I’m having to leave you as I head off to the Emirates Stadium for the game.

The more than capable Ix Techau will take over (sort of) from now, here’s hoping for 3 points – adios!

14:22

Arsenal.com confirm the Arsenal team to play Wolves:

Szczesny, Sagna, Djourou, Koscielny, Clichy, Wilshere, Song, Fabregas, Walcott, Arshavin, Van Persie

As expected, then. No change from our 4-2-3-1 formation, RvP leads the line with Fabregas tucked in behind him and Song and Wilshere providing the double-pivot in midfield.

Ix says she expects Song to be assigned a man-marking duty, today; he had this sort of role against Everton, tracking Arteta from midfield and is presumably a sort of test-run for Barcelona in mid-week where he will be asked to man-mark Messi, or one of the midfielders (Iniesta).

We’re just waiting for official conformation of the subs and Wolves’ squad.

Meanwhile, Manchester City are drawing with Manchester rivals Utd, after Nani put the home side ahead and Silva scored an odd equalising goal. A draw for City would see them move level with Arsenal on points having played two games more, but still in 3rd due to a +7 goal difference between them, while Utd want to stretch their lead to 7, and not 5 points at the top.

Oh, actually, ROONEY has put the home side ahead again with a pretty superb scissor-kick.

13:00

Right then! This will be interesting.. I’m Joss (co-writer of Arsenal Report) and I’m trying to avoid all clichés like “I’ll be your pilot/host today, sit down, relax and enjoy the ride”…

Key Tactical Battles

Wolves are expected to field a narrow 3 man midfield with Jamie O’Hara keeping his place after they ended Man Utd’s run of 29 games unbeaten. It will be interesting to see how the pivot works out, McCarthy may go for two deep lying midfielders, sitting back and breaking up play, with one more advanced player (Either Milijas or O’Hara) or he can go for two fairly central midfielders with one dropping very deep, tracking Cesc Fabregas. I reckon they will opt for the latter, able to man mark Fabregas while keeping an eye on Wilshere and Song. But.. This may mean Van Persie has some space to operate in between the lines.
