The almighty 2016-2017 summer transfer window thread

Yarmolenko is starting to talk about Everton being a better fit form him than Barca because he wants to play regularly rather than "take selfies with Messi". Never thought he would even think about leaving, I'd take him in a heartbeat.

Unless he goes to Man Utd, Man City or Chelsea of course, then I'll claim I never really wanted him.

Tactics change constantly you pillock.

The only time tactics change under Wenger is due to opposition behaviour. The def-counter against Man City, for example...wasn't at all down to instruction, but down to the fact that we were so outclassed in possession that we had no other option.

Even the shape is ridiculous...I've never seen a team play the same shape against Barca as against Sheffield Wednesday. Why is it 4-2-3-1 in both games? In one of them we are expected to have about 30% of the ball, in the other we're expected to have 70%...so why is the shape the same?

That was directed at va10. I agree that wenger is very resistant to actually making tactical adjustments based on the opposition.

Yes. Inferior opposition us expected to "play football" and not just sit back and crowd the box. I'd they do park the bus, the excuses for dropping points are all lined up and ready to go.

Actually, against inferior opposition the most clever approach would be to let them dominate. Give them the ball and counter...they're already expecting us to dominate so it will take them by surprise and drag them fully out of their gameplan they've been tinkering with for at least a week. They have to adapt on the fly, meanwhile we just slice them open as soon as they make mistakes.

But that's not the "Arsenal (read: Wenger) way". We will always go into a game with the intention of dominating possession and patiently building up attacks in a medium pace. Doesn't matter who we're playing. This is Wenger's tactical legacy: non-adaptive and highly predictive tactics.

Being played around by Jamie Vardy with Giroud starting up front for us. A return to the banter era

Only have to look at before Pep's Barca & post-Pep Barca to see how football evolved. Tiki Taka died and Jupp Heynckes' ruled supreme

Nothing wrong with Barca now and they do employ the so called tiki taka.

@va10 you claim that tactics which worked in 1999 ought to work in 2016 without any adjustment. How is disagreeing with such idiocy at all related with playing a video game? Why do you always resort to personal attacks whenever called out on being a wrong?

No, you are wrong, Ix 4-4-2 is eternal.

Barca don't play tiki taka, they play a lot more direct under Luis Enrique

What dose tika-taka mean too you?

Pep's Barca, no-one plays football like that anymore. Pep himself said he hates the term 'Tiki Taka' as it implies passing with no purpose. Barca are very very direct with Neymar & Suarez in their side, add Rakitic to that as well and the tiki taka identity has disappeared.

It is an extremely defensive tactic and had been phased out by Heynckes Bayern which obliterated Barca by attacking at pace

Tiki Taka is still very much alive and well at Barca. Just because Pep interprets the term to mean passing without intent doesn't mean that's what it actually stands for. Tiki Taka is short passes, possession-based, explosive runs, fancy skills. In other words: Barca.

They won't believe that unless a video on youtube is titled Barca tiki taka 2015/16. Or Gary the tactical genius Nevile says they play tiki taka....

Playing definitions games completely misses the point. Teams like barca stay ahead of the 2nd tier teams by adjusting their tactical approach. You think they will play the same vs atleti next year? Obviously not. Their tactics were exposed by Simeon, and they will surely try to adjust.

If Wenger were managing barca, they should try the exact same strategy that got them humiliated vs atleti in the ucl, and then make a bunch of excuses about how they have some unfair advantage or that the team was simply unlucky in front of goal per other nonsense.

Barca employ a completely different style in comparison to when Pep was there. Mostly down to Luis Suarez being down the middle

Formation and tactics has nothing to do with tiki-taka, which is a philosophy and not a strategy. You can play a 4-4-2 def counter and still play tiki-taka.
