Carl Jenkinson vs Hector Bellerin vs Mathieu Debuchy

Posted by Ix Techau almost 9 years ago · 15 replies

Our right-back situation is getting ridiculous. With Carl's successful loan spell at West Ham and his recent performances in the U21s, surely we can't possibly be thinking about letting him go. At the same time we have Bellerin emerging as a top prospect in a modern wing back role, and ahead of him we have Debuchy - one of the best right backs in the world, statistically.

Jenkinson is a classic British full back in the Gary Neville mould, Bellerin is more like a skinny Roberto Carlos bombing forward like no one told him he's a defender, and Debuchy is like a mixture of the two.

So what the hell do we do?

The ideal scenario for me would be to loan Jenkinson to another Premier League club for one more year of learning his trade as a first team starter. Debuchy and Bellerin fight it out for the starting position at Arsenal in 2015-2016. Then we re-assess.

If only we had this problem in every position.

I like all three of them. Yes, ideally, Jenkinson to be loaned out for another year to gain first team game time. Debuchy and Bellerin on rotation. In case Debuchy ages or Bellerin snatched by Spanish giants (Spaniards love going home? Idk), Jenko can come back and be part of our British core. I believe the Gooner DNA in him could make him willing to go out on loan again to make way to come back one day.

The other option would be to loan out Bellerin, and give Carl a chance to break into the first team, especially if he's starting to lose faith in his future at Arsenal.

Not sure Bellerin would be happy being loaned out after last season?

I love this topic. I have wrestling with the scenarios myself and I'll admit i find it quite pleasant that we have a situation like this. My first option would be to sell Debuchy and have Bellerin and Jenkinson fight it out. They are both more than capable of holding their own and have proved it throughout the season. That unfortunately is in an ideal world, the next best option is to get Bellerin on a long term contract and send him out to an English club for a season loan spell. This ensuring that we keep him on at the club and reassuring Jenkinson that he is still a crucial part of our future.

I think the one thing we have to take into account is that Jenkinson has red and white in his blood. He's an actual Gooner. Bellerin is brilliant, but there's always the chance that Barcelona could come sniffing around again. We'll see how strong his bond is with the club then...

IMHO, I think Debuchy/Bellerin will rotate the role and Jenkinson will stay out on loan for the time being. Once Debuchy's contract nears expiry we'll sell or let him go on a free and Jenkinson will take his place. We're incredibly healthy at fullbacks though.

Sell Debuchy! Keep Jenko and Hector. Young, Hungry and fighting for the place. In case both are out injured we have Chambers as backup. I have no love for Debuchy. His tackling is agricultural and i genuinely fear that he is going to damage the opponent when he is under pressure. The only advantage he has is experience..

Debuchy >>>>>>

It's like he'd been here for years when he joined. He's a hard bastard and has a sick haircut. A must keep.

Azpilicueta did the whole right-back to left-back thing. Be interesting to see if Hector could do the same.

Why would you want that? Let Gibbs and Monreal fight for our left-back spot. Monreal has arguably been one of our best players last season. I know he won't have a better season than last, but no need to put a right footed player there to disrupt our attacking play. Azpilicueta did a fine job in a defensive team.

Jenks out on loan, Bellerín and Debuchy first team. Bellerín will probably take the first team spot as the season goes on, which means Debuchy goes out next year and Jenks comes back in. That'd be my prediction.

If this happens, it would have been the worst expenditure ever bringing Debuchy to the Emirates. Spent his first season injured, and the next season usurped by a 19-year old. Can't see that happening. Easy to forget that Debuchy is probably the best right-back in the world, statistically.

Debuchy is a great right back, automatic first choice imo. Very solid in the air as well and can cover center back if required.

I think it's just that good old short-term Arsenal memory acting up again. This always happens with our injured players. Wilshere was immense at the start of the season, got injured and people started turning on him. Same with Theo.
