Buying Ozil was a mistake

Posted by TopTopQuality over 8 years ago · 126 replies

Ozil was a last minute panic buy by Wenger. A player in a position we didn't need to strengthen. He isn't playing to his best ability at Arsenal either. His main strength is through balls to fast runners, like it was with CR7. There are no such players at Arsenal except Walcott, who rarely plays. You can quote stats all you like about his key passes. In this Arsenal team Ramsey, Sanchez, Cazorla would've had better stats and a much better overall contribution than Ozil if they played as N10. I can name at least 3 players at Arsenal who would be better as No10 -

Ramsey - he's creative, a goal scorer, much better defensively, much better work rate,

Sanchez - well, he shits all over Ozil

Cazorla - he's already done it before and saved our asses in his first season at Arsenal

Everyone had a hard on anticipating a partnership between Sanchez and Ozil. But there isn't one (except maybe that goal vs Reading I think, in FA cup). Sanchez isn't really a winger. He's better suited to No10 position. If he played as a shadow striker behind Giroud he'd be scoring 30+ goals and getting 20+ assists per season.

If there was a bid of £40-50m for Ozil I'd sell him in a heart beat. And get a proper winger, be it Pedro, or even freaking Draxler, and have some money left over.

I remember when Cazorla was playing on the wing I was saying he'd be much better in central midfield. Everyone rolled their eyes. Even after Cazorla had an excellent game in that position against some Turkish club in CL. It's the sheepish mentality of many Arsenal fans, they just go into denial. Plus flogging Ozil would de congest the midfield a bit. If Sanchez and Ramsey were rotating in No10, Wishere would be getting more game time rotating with Cazorla in CM.

I know most would say something like "YOU'RE CLUELESS, OZIL IS WORLD CLASS". But they'd be the clueless ones, just a bunch of brainwashed puppets.

Besides no one's denying Ozil's quality, he's just not well suited to this Arsenal team. Plus we have better players than him.

Did you not see Özil's form as soon as he came back?

Ramsey could never play as a number 10 for numerous reasons. First of all it'd be neglecting his defensive attributes such as his engine and physicality. Secondly his goalscoring comes from his late runs into the box which aren't possible playing behind the striker and thirdly he's not on the same level of creativity as Özil.

Alexis is a poor passer of the ball and we'd be neglect of any fluidity in our attack if he played at number 10.

Cazorla simply isn't as good as Özil.

Footballing wise Mesut is easily the best player at the club. His form at the end of last season indicated that. Now with his first full pre-season I'm expecting him to be the best he's ever been. A truly creative forced who influences play massively.

I thought everyone was over the underrating of Özil, obviously not it seems.

Are you one of those who instead of giving a well reasoned response just type "lol"

Are you one of those who instead of watching the game, just posts inaccuracies?

Tell me about Ozil's "defensive attributes". Besides It's Ramsey's pressing nd winning the ball from the opposition that counts

Secondly his goalscoring comes from his late runs into the box which aren't possible playing behind the striker

I don't know which Ramsey you've been watching but he certainly scores all sorts of goals. A famous example (the shadow striker type) - the winning goals in the FA Cup final vs Hull from Giroud assist.

thirdly he's not on the same level of creativity as Özil.

Maybe, but he'd catch up with more game time in that position. Besides, he'd more that make up for it with his other strengths.

That's exactly the kind of abstract waffle I'm tired of hearing.

Well, I hope he does step up. Because it seems we're stuck with him.

You don't need defensive attributes to play at number 10, which is why it'd be wasting Ramsey's talents there.

'Catch up with more gametime in that position'? Are you serious? You think Ramsey will be able to dictate the tempo in a mature way and also have as good of a vision as Özil just by playing there? Wow. Ramsey is tactically poor which is why he will never be entrusted there plus his passing isn't as good. I'm sorry but that statement is completely ridiculous.

Abstract waffle? Christ. Thank fuck we have a sensible person running the club. Woe is us being stuck with one of the best number 10's in World football.

Not gonna lie this post is the result of me being a bit flustered. I can't believe it's 2015 and some people still don't rate Özil, it bemuses me.

But seriously, I fully understand the annoyance of listening to football hipsters claiming Özil is a genius despite not knowing why they have that opinion in the first place...but it's worth keeping in mind that Özil is one of those rare players who does most of his work off-the-ball. His positioning, his reading of the game, his movement to draw opposition players out of line, and his ability to predict where his teammates will be in two or three moves ahead.

These sort of players aren't made for TV. They look like they're not doing anything. And stat loggers like Opta don't track off-the-ball actions, so in many examples their stats aren't even that great (although in Özil's case they're pretty good to say the least).

This calmness and measured decision-making in the #10 position is exactly what Arsenal needs. Before Özil we had been playing very attack-minded and direct players who want to bomb forward. Özil adds a focal point and sets the tempo in a crucial position, which in turn calms the players around him and unlocks some of their restrictions.

Decision making, composure, first touch and vision: all attributes he has in spades and necessary for a number 10. The only thing he lacks is his finishing which is quite poor. Otherwise, he's the closest thing we have to the modern Bergkamp.

It would be great if we could swap Ozil for Benzema. Ozil would enter god mode with CR7 and Bale either side of him. That would be a win win situation for both clubs.

With Ox on the left, Sanchez as n10, Walcott on the right, Giroud/Benz up front we'd walk the league.

But unfortunately Wenger will stick with Ozil through thick and thin, as we know. I hope Ozil gets ill for half a season and we get a run of games with Sanchez as n10. He'd score 40 goals.
