Buying Ozil was a mistake

Posted by TopTopQuality over 8 years ago · 126 replies

Ozil was a last minute panic buy by Wenger. A player in a position we didn't need to strengthen. He isn't playing to his best ability at Arsenal either. His main strength is through balls to fast runners, like it was with CR7. There are no such players at Arsenal except Walcott, who rarely plays. You can quote stats all you like about his key passes. In this Arsenal team Ramsey, Sanchez, Cazorla would've had better stats and a much better overall contribution than Ozil if they played as N10. I can name at least 3 players at Arsenal who would be better as No10 -

Ramsey - he's creative, a goal scorer, much better defensively, much better work rate,

Sanchez - well, he shits all over Ozil

Cazorla - he's already done it before and saved our asses in his first season at Arsenal

Everyone had a hard on anticipating a partnership between Sanchez and Ozil. But there isn't one (except maybe that goal vs Reading I think, in FA cup). Sanchez isn't really a winger. He's better suited to No10 position. If he played as a shadow striker behind Giroud he'd be scoring 30+ goals and getting 20+ assists per season.

If there was a bid of £40-50m for Ozil I'd sell him in a heart beat. And get a proper winger, be it Pedro, or even freaking Draxler, and have some money left over.

I remember when Cazorla was playing on the wing I was saying he'd be much better in central midfield. Everyone rolled their eyes. Even after Cazorla had an excellent game in that position against some Turkish club in CL. It's the sheepish mentality of many Arsenal fans, they just go into denial. Plus flogging Ozil would de congest the midfield a bit. If Sanchez and Ramsey were rotating in No10, Wishere would be getting more game time rotating with Cazorla in CM.

I know most would say something like "YOU'RE CLUELESS, OZIL IS WORLD CLASS". But they'd be the clueless ones, just a bunch of brainwashed puppets.

Besides no one's denying Ozil's quality, he's just not well suited to this Arsenal team. Plus we have better players than him.

Assists in PL - Cazorla from a deeper position 11 Ozil as n10 - 5 assists

Ok he missed many games, but at the same rate he'd still have fewer even with the same number of games as Cazorla

You keep talking about "off the ball movement, decision making, tempo control, etc". But if it's not amounting to any end product, I don't see your point. (he's behind Cazorla, Sanchez in everything: assists, key passes, goals, despite playing as n10) Keep deluding yourselves with that load of vague, abstract tosh. Well, if you calculate per minute, then his key passes are better. But playing in the middle you'd expect that.

With that last sentence, you've pretty much just contradicted yourself. He had the highest chance creation per min in the Prem last season too.

Have to laugh at the OP. His mind is so small he thinks it is a good idea to join a site to WUM. It does become funnier though when he consistently looks a tool and is proven wrong time and again. Thanks OP for giving me someone else to laugh at - you.

Ozil had an ok game against WATFORD. Everyone goes mental - "WOW, he's the new Jesus, he's a world class genius"

This further proves what I said before - you're desperate and deluded.

It's almost as if the United match didn't happen in this geezer's head

Astonishing stuff

He's had a sensational season so far, what are you on about? Statistically, emotionally, anything-ly. You simply can't argue against him anymore. And I still don't understand this:Why do you want him to fail?

Yep - the most creative player in Europe at the moment.

'TopTopQuality' is not an Arsenal fan - have a look at his best ever team... he is a wind up merchant. He has child like characteristics of laughing at his own jokes and seeking attention.

Alright calm down, let's not attack people. He's entitled to his opinion at the end of the day.

Didn't say he wasn't - just pointing out his qualities.

Yes, one more assist than Hoolahan of Norwich.

Ozil's one strength is his final ball. But even at that Cazorla and Sanchez are better than him. But since Ozil plays centrally, he's bound to have more assists.

I don't want him to fail.

The reason I don't like him is because he doesn't score, he's always a passenger in games, has no defensive contribution.

But most importantly Arsenal would be much stronger if we had someone else in that position.

Imagine if Sanchez played instead of him in that position and we got someone like Reus to play on the left, or even give Ox a run of games there. That would be a completely devastating attack - quick, direct, with many runners. It would be more like 4-4-2 with Sanchez and Walcott (or Giroud) up front. Sanchez would be scoring 40-50 goals per season. I think I wrote this many times here.

It's not just about assists, it's about chances created. He creates most chances in Europe. Of all clubs in Europe, we have the top creator. He creates more chances than Messi, Iniesta, Thiago, Fabrecunt, Silva, etc.

And as I've explained to you before: chance created == assist. The only difference between the two is the assisted player's quality in the finish. Özil has zero power over whether a chance created turns into an assist or not. That is 100% up to the player receiving the ball.

Özil could make 100 perfect passes, but the number of assists will depend on who he's passing to. His assist rate would be lower if he had Chamakh in front of him, but that doesn't impact his quality.

It's both illogical and ridiculous to stare yourself blind on his assist count. As long as his chances created are high it means he's doing the right thing, it's just that the players he's passing aren't converting their chances. He can't do anything about that.

Scored tonight! Against Bayern! Defended well, made the most of limited possession, and could've had a few assists too. Great out ball to Giroud in the dying stages, and Giroud was immense in holding that particular pass up.

Had at least three highly dubious wonky decisions tonight, but also had a handful of fantastic passes. Had more of an impact for us than Vidal or Thiago had for Bayern, and they're considered the best team on the planet. Pretty sure we can lay this discussion to rest now as it's no longer even possible to argue against Mesut Özil.
