The Almighty 2015 Summer Transfer Window Thread

Posted by VA10 about 9 years ago · 476 replies

I know it's too early but I've just had a brilliant idea of an ideal Summer transfer window so I opened the thread, sue me.

So the news is we'll have 50 million quid for the Summer, here's what I'd do:

  • 10 million for Cech, he's the kind of a goalkeeper that wins you trophies
  • 40 million for Reus, love the guy
  • Khedira on a free.

Boom cancel the transfer window we've won it.

Still can't pull off a list on this contraption...

Is there any reason that's acceptable why Wenger's post shouldn't be under threat if we finish 10 points behind City thus fail to challenge?

Let's see where we are in January. The stubbornness is getting tiring, but Wenger does have two FA Cup trophies in the last two years so he's obviously doing something right.

With Man City and Chelsea making the Premier League their own competition, and then Man Utd and Liverpool throwing cash around as if they won a lottery, it's unrealistic to think that we should be automatically fighting for the title. There are four tiers of quality in the Premier League:

  1. Man City and Chelsea
  2. Arsenal, Liverpool and Man Utd
  3. Most other teams
  4. Three or four guaranteed relegation candidates

It's going to take a long time to upset that balance. And until we do, we'll be fighting for third or second place, at best.

Wilshere is a better CM than a number 10. Santi is a better number 10 than Jack is a no. 10. His best attributes are driving from deep and having a good passing range, his one-two's are the only good thing about his behind the striker play and he isn't intelligent or patient enough to be a world class number 10.

Özil is only 26, either Wilshere will be a bench player for 9/10ths of his Arsenal career or he better displace Ramsey or Cazorla in a deeper role.

I dont think Jack has had a run of games. He needs play 15 games before we can judge if he is better than Santi or not. He has had few games as 10 where he been poor but few where is has been at top. So its mixed response from my side. I frankly dont like him in the deeper role, That does not suit him at all.

So thierry henry and Mou suggest that we need to add 3/4 players to win the title. I think we have a very good squad to win the league all we need is good backups to the current players . For European glory we might need to add BIG players.

I think Henry's point was GK+CB+DM+ST, which realistically makes sense, even though I disagree about getting a world class striker. We already have one. And you could also argue that our goalkeeping options are more than good enough. They don't have the reputation of Courtois or the form of De Gea, but both Ospina and Szczesny are still very good keepers.

DM is absolutely necessary, but again...not someone who would start ahead of Coquelin, who deserves a chance at a full season with us as the primary DM.

That leaves a CB. We don't know enough about Gabriel, but if we just assume for a second that he's another CB gem in the same mould as Koscielny, do we really need another CB? Mertesacker, Koscielny, Gabriel, Chambers and Monreal all fully capable of playing that position.

Lastly, I agree with your last sentence to a degree. For consistent european glory we probably need a few more high profile players. But for a short-term plan of winning the Champions League (or even Euro League), all you need is luck and a good team unit.

I don't think Mertesacker is good enough for a team who wants to be serious contenders.

Given Gabriel is the real deal, Per and Chambers on the bench is more than good enough.

Yeah with five players capable of playing CB I see no desperate need for a new one. Unless it was a £40m marquee signing like Varane and we're selling Mertesacker to build the unstoppable three-man defence of Gabriel/Varane/Koscielny to win every trophy on the planet.

DM situation is a tricky one to me! I believe we have two players in our ranks who can and play well in those positions Toral and Belik. If we need to get someone new we should get some on who is over the top like Pogba or old enough to move out after a couple of years. I expected Flamini to do that but he has been horrible this year..

Toral isn't a DM and he isn't going to make it. Bielik should be 2/3 years away from breaking through.

We've had enough waiting with our failed youth project. We're Arsenal ffs

He would be a FANTASTIC DM, lad is superb. Sadly he had 4 BIG knee surgeries in 3 years which has put him on the edge.

Injury doesn't seem like much of an issue anymore, he's had like 35+ appearances for Brentford this season. But I wouldn't call him a DM, he's very much an attacking midfielder.

Toral
