The Almighty 2015 Summer Transfer Window Thread

Posted by VA10 about 9 years ago · 476 replies

I know it's too early but I've just had a brilliant idea of an ideal Summer transfer window so I opened the thread, sue me.

So the news is we'll have 50 million quid for the Summer, here's what I'd do:

  • 10 million for Cech, he's the kind of a goalkeeper that wins you trophies
  • 40 million for Reus, love the guy
  • Khedira on a free.

Boom cancel the transfer window we've won it.

Still can't pull off a list on this contraption...

Is there any reason that's acceptable why Wenger's post shouldn't be under threat if we finish 10 points behind City thus fail to challenge?

Let's see where we are in January. The stubbornness is getting tiring, but Wenger does have two FA Cup trophies in the last two years so he's obviously doing something right.

With Man City and Chelsea making the Premier League their own competition, and then Man Utd and Liverpool throwing cash around as if they won a lottery, it's unrealistic to think that we should be automatically fighting for the title. There are four tiers of quality in the Premier League:

  1. Man City and Chelsea
  2. Arsenal, Liverpool and Man Utd
  3. Most other teams
  4. Three or four guaranteed relegation candidates

It's going to take a long time to upset that balance. And until we do, we'll be fighting for third or second place, at best.

6 and a half hours until our club & manager accept we're not good or ambitious enough for the title so 4th will do

Same shit every year.

It's a good thing I expected exactly this all summer. Saved a lot of time reading, checking transfer news.

What I fear is that when this season ends as usual - 4th, Sanchez will say, I didn't join to be 4th every year and push for a transfer

Stop presuming, the season is long. We have not fired goals yet does not mean that we are not capable, the addition of TOP quality would have been a welcome step but it does not mean that we are a weakened team. Its a momentum and once the team starts to rise we can get on a roll. We are stronger than last year having added Cech to the post. Question AW and Team at this time is just plain stupidity.
May be at the end of the season, we can, should he fail.

It seems then that Wenger is putting his theory of cohesion to the test. We've heard every window that he doesn't want to add too many players to upset the balance, having to get them acclimated to the league, etc. I interpret that as him saying that adding no players at all would improve team familiarity on the pitch, as well as dressing room morale.

Luckily for us we have another team in the league that has gone the exact opposite way: Man Utd. They've turned over lots of players in the span of 18 months, so in order for Wenger's theory to be proven correct, we should get a reasonable amount of points on them.

Finishing below spurs, not playing UCL next year.

Not finishing in the top four is failure for a wealthy club? Not challenging for the title at all is failure.

Why are people so un-ambitious? We are Arsenal. Failure for us isn't not finishing in the top four, it's not challenging for the title. Long gone are the times where we were poor little Arsenal who can't compete and can't spend over 15m for a player. With our increased resources our objectives should change too.

Why are people so un-ambitious?

Nine or ten years of mediocrity does that. But being realistic also helps. We simply don't have the resources other clubs do. Man Utd just spent £120m this summer. In comparison, the ten most expensive signings in Arsenal history only cost £180m combined.

We don't have to spend ridiculous amounts to compete though. Many believe that this squad is good enough to win the title and is a blind faith proposed by WKB. We are only two players away from genuinely contending, one of them being a starter.

We could've easily bought someone like Lacazette, Vietto or Dybala if we weren't going to chase this Benzema pipedream all summer. They might not necessarily be better than Giroud but they offer something completely different to what we have. Welbeck is more of a winger and not very good and Theo believes he's a striker but is a winger all day.

One of the aforementioned that we could've bought (a short list of many potential players we could've been looking into) would offer a different option when Giroud is going through his patch of not scoring for 8 games & be more effective than playing Welbeck or Theo. Giroud played like his arse was on fire when fucking Welbeck who is a completely mediocre player was pushing him for places. Could you imagine what he'd be like if someone like Icardi, Jackson, Lacazette etc was pushing him every week.

We have the resources to buy these players and all I want for us is to actually try and challenge for once without feeling sorry for ourselves that we can only spend 50m which is enough with the squad we currently have.

Giroud is going through his 4th season as an uncontested pure striker. And that is beyond ridiculous.

Welbeck is more of a winger and not very good

I don't agree with that at all. When we used Welbeck as CF at the start of last season he was fantastic and was just getting into the groove when Giroud came back and he got pulled out of momentum, sat on the bench for a while and was then played out of position on the flanks.

He is most definitely not a winger. He is a central forward, and he should be used there. If he can replicate what he did last season in that position, it might be enough to give us diversity in that position.

If Giroud is injured or out-of-form, I think we can survive until January with Welbeck, Campbell, Theo and Sanchez deputising there if necessary.

Giroud is going through his 4th season as an uncontested pure striker. And that is beyond ridiculous.

Giroud in-form has similar stats to Diego Costa, so he can't be that bad. They were on similar numbers until the last 3-4 games of the season last year.
