The Almighty 2015 Summer Transfer Window Thread

Posted by VA10 about 9 years ago · 476 replies

I know it's too early but I've just had a brilliant idea of an ideal Summer transfer window so I opened the thread, sue me.

So the news is we'll have 50 million quid for the Summer, here's what I'd do:

  • 10 million for Cech, he's the kind of a goalkeeper that wins you trophies
  • 40 million for Reus, love the guy
  • Khedira on a free.

Boom cancel the transfer window we've won it.

Still can't pull off a list on this contraption...

Is there any reason that's acceptable why Wenger's post shouldn't be under threat if we finish 10 points behind City thus fail to challenge?

Let's see where we are in January. The stubbornness is getting tiring, but Wenger does have two FA Cup trophies in the last two years so he's obviously doing something right.

With Man City and Chelsea making the Premier League their own competition, and then Man Utd and Liverpool throwing cash around as if they won a lottery, it's unrealistic to think that we should be automatically fighting for the title. There are four tiers of quality in the Premier League:

  1. Man City and Chelsea
  2. Arsenal, Liverpool and Man Utd
  3. Most other teams
  4. Three or four guaranteed relegation candidates

It's going to take a long time to upset that balance. And until we do, we'll be fighting for third or second place, at best.

Yeah, no interest in selling Koscielny.

Unless they throw in Varane and give us the chance to sign Benzema.

Lot of news saying Vidal is done deal for 21mil, source is Hernán Feler. Some say he was first to reveal Alexis transfer. How reliable is this guy ? And if true ... I will be even more confused of how we line up next year. This will mean Arsene have complete trust in Coq with the DM position.

Surely not. Not for 21 mil at least.

If it's worth anything, Vidal's agent; who is also Alexis' agent, follows that @hfeler on Twitter.

I wrote this on Reddit if anyone is interested RE: someone not wanting Cech or Vidal:

A goalkeeper was an area I thought was essential to improve whenever we can. Cech is clearly miles above the two we have at the minute and he himself will have a great impact on Szczesny. Wenger obviously sees Cech reigning supreme for 3/4 years then hopefully letting a mature and more talented Szczesny take the mantle. It's nice to see Wenger being ruthless in this regard because we haven't had a good keeper (let alone a world class one) for about a decade.

The beauty if we signed Vidal is that he isn't limited to where he can play. He's just as adept as a DM as he is an attacking midfielder. Obviously his best role is as a box-to-box, but he has the tools of the trade to pretty much play anywhere on the pitch. In games where we're pretty much dominant, Coquelin becomes somewhat useless. His passing is quite erratic and there's no need for him to be there, Vidal is the opposite. He can win tackles as well as Coquelin then start a counter in an instant. He also brings the wealth of experience and a winners mentality, which Cech does too. Imagine Alexis & Vidal hounding the other team for 90 mins, the Grove would be going bonkers.

This doesn't even 'kill Coquelin'. If we go to Stamford Bridge, Old Trafford etc and have a duo of Coquelin & Vidal then it's pretty much impossible for us to get bullied in midfield ever again. We did very well in the big games last season, but we can improve them results even further.

And obviously a striker is a top priority too. Giroud for me, as loved as he is on reddit, isn't good enough to be a starting striker if we want to win the Prem. I think Walcott will sign a new deal and it'll be between him and Oli G for a starting spot, but I'm not so sure whether he'll have the consistency to play there. Wenger has always stated that we are in the market for absolute quality. We should always be looking to improve all aspects of our team constantly. And Cech & Vidal are huge upgrades. But that is the reason why I don't think we'll sign a striker. There is a bereft of world class strikers at the minute, but if CR7 is moved to the middle as planned and Benzema is put on the bench it could be an interesting deadline day…

Cech is fine with me, I just don't buy into him being 15 points better than Szczesny or Ospina. If it means Szczesny improves so he can properly take the #1 spot in a few years' time, all good.

The beauty if we signed Vidal is that he isn't limited to where he can play. He's just as adept as a DM as he is an attacking midfielder.

He really isn't, though. He's aggressive and tenacious, like Sanchez, but his off-the-ball behaviour and positioning is nowhere near that of a DM. He doesn't move laterally to protect the back four, that's not his primary objective. He doesn't read the game from a defensive perspective. He's a highly attacking player that tackles and presses well.

This doesn't even 'kill Coquelin'. If we go to Stamford Bridge, Old Trafford etc and have a duo of Coquelin & Vidal then it's pretty much impossible for us to get bullied in midfield ever again.

Provided Vidal would start in a double pivot alongside Coquelin, sure. But that's not our current system. We've played a 4-1-2-3 for quite some time now, with the secondary AM pulled a bit further back than Özil. The strength of Coquelin is his ownership of the central area in front of the back four. Playing a double pivot is very different.

And again, who is Vidal replacing? Cazorla was played in the secondary AM position because Wilshere and Ramsey weren't 100% back to form and fitness, but they would be the first choice candidates for that role. If we bring Vidal in, we now have the following players to fill that third central midfield spot:

  • Aaron Ramsey
  • Jack Wilshere
  • Santi Cazorla
  • Mikel Arteta
  • Tomas Rosicky

In my opinion I'd rather have Ramsey and Wilshere in that slot. They have way more Premier League experience, have been at the club for a long time and know the drill, are part of the British Core™, and are quite frankly better than Vidal.

There is a bereft of world class strikers at the minute, but if CR7 is moved to the middle as planned and Benzema is put on the bench it could be an interesting deadline day…

Even though I think Giroud is absolute world class, on par with the best strikers on the planet bar Messi and Ronaldo, I agree that Benzema would be an upgrade, or at the very least a very good complement to the forward selection.

Do you really think we want Benzema? To back up Giroud we have Danny who wants to play centrally and is bound to have a good season provided he stays fit. We have Theo and Chuba asking to be played upfront. In terms of number of players we have we will have to let one of these go we are to add Benzema and most probably Theo.I would hate to loose any of these players. If we talk about quality upfront Benzema is just a notch above Giroud but not a HUGE upgrade. I dont mind us adding a left back who can play a winger though.

I agree, not a huge upgrade. I see it more as a complement. They can rotate or play together. But to be completely honest I think the only position we actually need is a left winger. Plenty of depth and talent in all other positions, including GK.

Giroud to Benzema is a title winning upgrade for me

I still find it weird that Alexis' & Vidal's agent follows that Feler bloke though, regardless of reliability.

Including the fact that Benzema needs to get used to new teammates, new system, new mentality, the Premier League tempo, etc?

I've wanted him at Arsenal since he was at Lyon, I think he'll fit like a glove if he came over here.
